Psychiatrists / Psychologists:

Psychiatrists/Psychologists: are usually referred to as behaviouralists in veterinary practice. In ‘human’ medicine, psychologists usually help mentally healthy people find ways to function better and don’t prescribe medications, while psychiatrists mainly help mentally unwell people (eg schizophrenics) and do prescribe medications. Cats with behavioural problems are usually mentally healthy but trying to exist with their cat values in a human dominated world. Firstly, we need to be sure that the cat does not have an underlying medical problem. We then try and focus on explaining why cat behaviour that seems perfectly normal to them is entirely unacceptable to you (eg tearing the sofa to threads or weeing in the corner), and what changes can be instituted so they have a normal expression of this behaviour and not drive you crazy. Sometimes medications are required to help the situation.
